Hardy Jones
English Instructor
Dr. Hardy Jones is a frontline English teacher with a Ph.D. and more than 25 years of teaching experience. Dr. Jones has worked as a college English professor and director of creative writing, and he is also a -writer who has written and edited a number of literary journals and books. His goal as a teacher is to impart his experiences to his students and to teach them to express themselves confidently, both orally and in writing, expanding their imaginations and unlocking the potential of their generation.
Gabriela Ayala
English Instructor
Mrs. Ayala is an English teacher with over fourteen years of experience teaching all levels of English. She also assists students in applying to college, writing essays, and preparing for the SAT. Mrs. Ayala uses a student centered, mentor style of teaching that is also fun! An interesting fact about Mrs. Ayala is that she has three sons that are only three years apart. She values her relationship with her students and strives to make lasting impressions on them.
Maureen Carter
History Instructor
Mrs. Maureen Carter is an adjunct instructor with over 25 years of teaching and administrative experience. Mrs. Carter has also led several teacher workshops on topics such as using primary source documents in instruction to critically engage students. In her classes, Mrs. Carter uses a wide variety of primary source documents and film clips to analyze periods of history and take a critical look at how people lived. When she is not teaching, Mrs. Carter enjoys playing the guitar and listening to music.
Liz Washburn
English Instructor
Mrs. Liz Washburn has over 20 years of experience teaching advanced high school English. During her career in education, she also achieved National Board Certification in Secondary English Language Arts. She has a student-centered style of teaching, one where learners actively participate by reading, discussing, questioning, presenting, and writing. She currently lives with her husband in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where she enjoys kayaking, hiking, and spending time with their two horses, dog, and cat.
Kashonda Bynum
Math Instructor
Ms. Kashonda Bynum is a high school Mathematics teacher. Her teaching style is Student-Centered. She takes a demonstrating and coaching approach when presenting a lesson. A fun fact about her is that she loves living in North Carolina because they have the mountains and the ocean here. In her opinion, they have the best of both worlds, and she enjoys visiting both often! Welcome to Mathematics with Ms. Bynum! She would love the opportunity to work with the student soon.
Michael Gilroy
History Instructor
Mr. Gilroy is a social studies teacher from Florida. He believes in a student-centered, individual approach with a focus on building both knowledge in the content area and the skills needed to succeed in a student's future academic career. Mr. Gilroy utilizes a wide variety of approaches to ensure that students of all kinds of learning styles master the content. An interesting fact about Mr. Gilroy is that he has lived and taught in three different countries.
Matthew Heaston
Social Studies Instructor
Mr. Matthew Heaston teaches high school social studies including American history, American Government, World history, Geography, and so many more. He lives, teach, and coach soccer in Des Moines, Iowa. He prides himself in being open to all cultures and lifelong learning. He has an eclectic teaching experience in the social sciences. His teaching style varies depending on the audience, but he prefers to use guided lectures and discussions mixed with some projects and activities. Mr. Heaston loves cooking and the culinary arts! He used to be a chef as his first career! Mr. Heaston is very excited to help students achieve their goals! He looks forward to working and learning with everyone!
Stephen Giannotti
History Instructor
Mr. Giannotti is an AP-certified high school history teacher from Virginia who earned his master’s in teaching from the University of Virginia. Mr. Giannotti is committed to advancing a progressive, hands-on approach to learning. Each lesson is designed to first expose students to background information on a particular topic. Following direct instruction, students work to apply and enhance their understanding of that information through collaborative exercises. An interesting fact about Mr. Giannotti is that he is currently teaching at the high school he graduated from. Mr. Giannotti always makes it a priority to support his students and he hopes you consider joining his classes!
Eugenia Badger
English/Spanish Instructor
Dr. Eugenia Badger is a high school English teacher from Indiana and is certified to teach AP English and AP Literature. Dr. Badger also serves as the Speech and Debate team coach and teaches Spanish and Agriculture. Dr. Badger has a flexible teaching style that she adjusts to match a student’s needs by asking questions and learning more about what a student does and does not know. Her goal is to make class fun and productive in order to enhance the learning experience. An interesting fact about Dr. Badger is that she shows American Quarter Horses. She welcomes and invites all students to take her class!
Jonathan Doyle
Language Instructor
Jonathan Doyle graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) with a Master's degree in teaching. He has taught English, French, Italian, German, and Japanese for many years. He specializes in integrating multiple intelligences into the curriculum to achieve better teaching results. Mr. Doyle hopes students will be curious, not afraid to make mistakes, and use mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
Elizabeth Homans
Math Instructor
Elizabeth Homans is a mathematics teacher with many years of experience. Her teaching style tends to be interactive. She will communicate and discuss with students specifically, guide students to find the right answer and help them to master the correct mathematical thinking. Ms. Homans wants to introduce students to some of her favorite math topics. She looks forward to working with you to solve problems and discuss concepts that will not only help prepare students for college but also enhance their ability to think critically about the world.
Kevin Renfro
Social Studies Instructor
Kevin Renfro is an experienced teacher. For more than a decade, he has led students to learn about government, economics, history and contemporary events, keeping pace with the times and constantly delivering new perspectives brought about by social and cultural changes to students to help them see the world from multiple perspectives. Mr. Renfro loves life, has a constant curiosity, loves learning and sharing everything he knows with his students. In his spare time, he enjoys riding, painting and playing trumpeter in a jazz band for 21 years.
Carl Gaines
Social Studies Instructor
Carl Gaines is an experienced teacher who is certified as an AP teacher in Social Sciences at the University of California. He has strong professional skills and has worked in the AP testing center to help evaluate and feedback students' AP scores. He graduated from the University of New Orleans with a Master's degree in history. In nearly 30 years of teaching, Gaines has always adhered to the concept of student-centered teaching, using guided interactive teaching methods in the classroom to help students understand difficult concepts. In addition, Gaines is proficient in C++, JAVA, program evaluation, educational technology and instructional design. He looks forward to meeting you in class, discussing academic issues with students and helping you succeed in your studies.
Carl Green
Social Studies Instructor
Mr. Carl Green teaches high school History and Social Science classes including Geography, AP Human Geography, World History, U.S. History, and U.S. Government and Economics. He has a very active and engaging teaching style. A fun fact about Mr. Green is that he loves cycling and has ridden his bike from Mexico to Canada. Mr. Green welcomes all students to come with him on a journey around the world and through history. After his course, students will better understand the world and people around them.
Samirah Merritt
Economics Instructor
Dr. Samirah Merritt is a Business professor from Florida with a passion for education and experience teaching college courses in Business such as Intro to Business, Organizational, Management, Personal Finance, and Intro to Economics. In addition to having a doctorate in Business Administration, Dr. Merritt is currently pursuing an additional degree in healthcare information systems to further her knowledge of medical record functions. Dr. Merritt is a life-long learner and the mother to one son who recently graduated from high school. An interesting fact about Dr. Merritt is that her hobbies include running marathons, fitness, and traveling. Dr. Merritt looks forward to working with students and welcomes you to her class.
Micah McCauley
Language Instructor
Micah McCauley is a senior foreign language teacher specializing in teaching French and English. He studied in France for 3 years and lived in China for 5 years to improve his teaching ability. In class, Mr. McCauley is good at combining the emerging teaching forms of the 21st century with traditional teaching methods to achieve better teaching results. He believes that the key to a good classroom is to establish communication between teachers and students. Mr. McCauley loves languages and he is looking forward to working with students to explore the mysteries of the language and help them master a foreign language skill.
Collin MacLeod
Science Instructor
Collin MacLeod has been a biology teacher for over 11 years both in the United States and in China. His teaching style values critical thinking, open discourse and also focused study on reviewing key concepts. He's taught IBDP, A levels and also AP and his students have consistently achieved outstanding scores. While working in China, aside from teaching, Collin enjoyed hiking on the great wall and studying Chinese.
Alexandre Pinheiro

Alexandre Pinheiro is an experienced science teacher with a PhD and outstanding teaching skills. More than a decade of teaching experience has given him an understanding of how to better help students master obscure science theorems that can be applied flexibly. Mr. Pinheiro is able to tailor his teaching to the students' level and build the confidence to succeed academically.
Chloé Cox
Science Instructor
Ms. Cox is an experienced science teacher with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Lyon College and a Master's degree in Education from Arkansas State University. In addition to teaching, she also serves as a science curriculum specialist and instructional guidance specialist for the local school district, guiding and evaluating the professional development of all science teachers. Ms. Cox has a distinctive teaching style. She specializes in using cutting-edge teaching facilities to develop courses for students. She works with mathematics curriculum experts to provide AVID video instruction to students and teachers, incorporating AVID's strategies, methods and concepts into the classroom. Cox is good at encouraging teaching, through affirmation and praise to establish the self-confidence of students, help students to actively participate in the classroom, brave expression of their own views, greatly increase the learning effect.
Mira Thomas
Math Instructor
With more than 25 years of experience in mathematics, Ms. Mira Thomas is an experienced teacher who is able to teach students math learning strategies at the college level. She integrates these strategies into the curriculum to help students master them and improve their math skills. She has always believed that in order to do well in math, students must understand the "why" behind these strategies. She enjoys open discussions with students, encourages them to ask questions, and helps students review the causes of common mistakes.
Bobbie Hoobler
English/Social Studies Instructor
Bobbie Hoobler is a brilliant teacher with many years of teaching experience in English and social sciences. He has nurtured generations of outstanding students with his superb teaching methods. His teaching style is very open. He likes to have a relaxed conversation with his students and make them feel relaxed and not afraid to make mistakes in class. Mr. Hoobler always believes that "failure is the greatest teacher." He believes that people can learn more from failure than from victory. He is good at helping his students make up for their mistakes, grow and improve. Teacher Hoobler has always been a big player in life, and a few years ago opened his own game comic shop with a friend called Empyre Game Comic Shop.
Christine Irvine
English Instructor
Christine Irvine is an experienced English teacher with a master's degree in Education from the Ohio State University. Her teaching style is interactive, and she is good at arousing students' learning enthusiasm, so as to interact with students more and master students' learning ability and progress. She is good at listening and can timely adjust her teaching style according to the feedback of students to help students better grasp the learning content.
Jodi-Beth Hazel
English Instructor
Ms. Jodi-Beth Hazel teaches English Language Arts and Reading. She really enjoys helping people find books that mean something to them and design all of the reading and writing that her and the students will do together around stories and topics that the students love. She reads at least fifty books a year and can’t wait to share her favorites with the students! She looks forward to seeing all her students in class!
James Thornburg
Social Studies Instructor
Mr. James Thornburg is a high school social studies teacher. He has taught World History, U.S. History, AP U.S. History, Current Event and many more classes in his education career as a high school teacher. He was also an AP exam grader before, so he can use the best strategies to prepare his students for their AP exams. Mr. Thornburg’s teaching style is personality driven. He likes to incorporate his own personal history and that of his students into the subjects that are being discussed. Mr. Thornburg grew up in Los Angeles, California, lived in the Midwest for 25 years, and now reside in El Paso, Texas near the border with Mexico. He looks forward to getting to know each and every one of his students. He will discuss social studies, make connections from the past to the present, discover how our world came to be and look to what the future may hold with all of his students!
Brooke Olson
Science Instructor
Ms. Brooke Olson teaches high school science classes using student-centered techniques that allow every student to investigate each topic in their own way! A fun fact about her is that she was born in Germany and moved to the US when she was 5. Ms. Olson is very excited that the students have chosen this program for online instruction and can’t wait to see what everyone will achieve!
Nini Kopaliani
Economics Instructor
Ms. Kopaliani is an experienced economics teacher with great patience and skill. She has a master's degree in economics. She is dedicated to helping students understand economics and gradually build up economic thinking. She is very good at planning engaging course and integrating interdisciplinary knowledge into the classroom to help students become fully engaged in class. She works hard and is passionate about teaching and wants to be an educational expert. She focuses on creating a positive environment for her students, motivating them to achieve their goals.
Alvin Echeverria
Science Instructor
Dr. Alvin Echeverria has over 16 years of experience teaching science to students of all ages. He loves science and enjoys connecting with students and being part of their educational journey. He believes that science has incredible lessons that go beyond cells, forces, and chemicals, and that an open mind allows us to learn science and also learn how to apply it, especially in places where science does not normally go. An interesting fact about Dr. Echeverria is that he originally went to school on a music scholarship, but instead fell in love with Physics and earned his Physics Teaching degree. Whether you want to learn health, biology, chemistry or physics, Dr. Echeverria invites you to join his class and to learn science and have a good time doing it.
John Bryant
Science Instructor
Mr. John Bryant has taught many different subjects of science in his 17-year career. He has taught Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Zoology, Physics, and Physical Science. He has a genuine love for all areas of science. Mr. Bryant is a teacher who teaches by inquiry. He thinks it is important to show the students not only to learn the curriculum, but how to learn by showing them how to think critically and with scientific inquiry. His class will be one of open discussion, collaboration, and exploration. Mr. Bryant enjoys many things in his free time. He enjoys music, technology and absolutely love sports. He also enjoys tennis and fishing. Mr. Bryant invites all students to come learn with him. He is a teacher who has success by building connections with my students that promote learning and a fun environment at the same time.
Michael Russell
Math Instructor
Mr. Russell is a high school Mathematics teacher at a college preparatory school in Texas, and he also tutors students in Spanish and SAT/ACT prep. Mr. Russell utilizes an interactive style of instruction that involves teaching by asking leading questions that help students to discover new ways to solve problems, and that uses a student’s existing foundation of knowledge as a starting point from which new skills can be built. Mr. Russell believes in using real-world examples to demonstrate techniques to solve problems and to understand why mathematics works the way it does rather than memorize processes and formulas. Mr. Russell looks forward to providing a math course that is fast-paced, interactive, informative, different, and sometimes even funny and invites you to take his classes!
