Michael Gilroy

History Instructor

Mr. Gilroy is a social studies teacher from Florida. He believes in a student-centered, individual approach with a focus on building both knowledge in the content area and the skills needed to succeed in a student's future academic career. Mr. Gilroy utilizes a wide variety of approaches to ensure that students of all kinds of learning styles master the content. An interesting fact about Mr. Gilroy is that he has lived and taught in three different countries.

Mr. David-James Nutter has a passion for teaching English. His teaching style is all about honoring each student's needs, passions and goals. He is an enthusiastic, reliable, professional, and passionate teacher who loves to do what he was born to do. He has valuable teaching experience creating a classroom environment that is fun, engaging, and rigorous. He very much looks forward to working with and teaching all students.

David-James Nutter

Victoria Jones

Victoria Jones serves as the lead science teacher at a high school in Cincinnati, OH and is a graduate of Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Ms. Jones uses a student lead inquiry approach to her teaching and has earned the Exemplary Teacher Rating at her school the past two years. An interesting fact about Ms. Jones is that she owns 3 cats and a 5-foot pet snake named Edmund. She is excited to work with you to study science through exploring the world we live in.

Raymond Wright

Mr. Raymond Wright is a Biology instructor who has been teaching students in grades 6-college biology for the past 10 years. In class, he likes to demonstrate and show students scientific concepts rather than just lecturing to them. He is also a big proponent of students taking part in their own education and developing critical thinking skills along with scientific knowledge. He loves kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling. One of the most exciting things he has done was snorkeling with bull sharks without a cage.

Kashonda Bynum

Math Instructor

Ms. Kashonda Bynum is a high school Mathematics teacher. Her teaching style is Student-Centered. She takes a demonstrating and coaching approach when presenting a lesson. A fun fact about her is that she loves living in North Carolina because they have the mountains and the ocean here. In her opinion, they have the best of both worlds, and she enjoys visiting both often! Welcome to Mathematics with Ms. Bynum! She would love the opportunity to work with the student soon.

Liz Washburn

English Instructor

Mrs. Liz Washburn has over 20 years of experience teaching advanced high school English. During her career in education, she also achieved National Board Certification in Secondary English Language Arts. She has a student-centered style of teaching, one where learners actively participate by reading, discussing, questioning, presenting, and writing. She currently lives with her husband in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where she enjoys kayaking, hiking, and spending time with their two horses, dog, and cat.

Maureen Carter

History Instructor

Mrs. Maureen Carter is an adjunct instructor with over 25 years of teaching and administrative experience. Mrs. Carter has also led several teacher workshops on topics such as using primary source documents in instruction to critically engage students. In her classes, Mrs. Carter uses a wide variety of primary source documents and film clips to analyze periods of history and take a critical look at how people lived. When she is not teaching, Mrs. Carter enjoys playing the guitar and listening to music.

Mrs. Ayala is an English teacher with over fourteen years of experience teaching all levels of English. She also assists students in applying to college, writing essays, and preparing for the SAT. Mrs. Ayala uses a student centered, mentor style of teaching that is also fun! An interesting fact about Mrs. Ayala is that she has three sons that are only three years apart.  She values her relationship with her students and strives to make lasting impressions on them.

Dr. Samirah Merritt

Business Instructor

Dr. Samirah Merritt is a Business professor from Florida with a passion for education and experience teaching college courses in Business such as Intro to Business, Organizational, Management, Personal Finance, and Intro to Economics. In addition to having a doctorate in Business Administration, Dr. Merritt is a life-long learner and the mother to one son who recently graduated from high school. An interesting fact about Dr. Merritt is that her hobbies include running marathons, fitness, and traveling. 

Jennifer Penton

Math Instructor

Mrs. Jennifer Penton is a Mathematics instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience. Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Penton has served as a member and leader on several education teams to help design curriculum and assessments for mathematics.  In her courses, Mrs. Penton likes to use interactive and student-centered teaching to encourage student participation and active learning. Mrs. Penton welcomes looks forward to working with students and guiding them through each lesson.

John Bryant

Mr. John Bryant has taught many different subjects of science in his 17-year career. He has a genuine love for all areas of science. He believes it is important to show the students not only to learn the curriculum, but how to learn by showing them how to think critically and with scientific inquiry. Mr. Bryant enjoys many things in his free time. He enjoys music, technology and absolutely love sports. He also enjoys tennis and fishing. Mr. Bryant invites all students to come learn with him.

Dr. Alvin Echeverria

Physics Instructor

Dr. Alvin Echeverria has over 16 years of experience teaching science to students of all ages. He loves science and enjoys connecting with students and being part of their educational journey. He believes that science has incredible lessons that go beyond cells, forces, and chemicals, and that an open mind allows us to learn science and also learn how to apply it, especially in places where science does not normally go. An interesting fact about Dr. Echeverria is that he originally went to school on a music scholarship, but instead fell in love with Physics.
